To drive in Iceland you do not need an international driver’s license unless your domestic license may be hard to understand in Iceland. If your license is written in simplified Chinese, Arabic or any other non-roman alphabet, then you will need to procure either an English version or an International license.

The standard speed limits in Iceland are:
  • 30-50 km/hour within cities and other populated areas
  • 80 km/hour on gravel roads in rural areas
  • 90 km/hour on paved roads.
In Iceland the cars are driven on the right side of the road and like in most European countries. You should never drink and drive and make sure you always have your seat belts on. If you need to use the cell phone during driving make sure it’s connected to a hands-free device. The main headlights must be kept on at all times, even during daylight hours. Off-road driving is strictly forbidden as it destroys the environment and natural landscape and can result in a fine up to 5,000 USD. Never park or drive in the middle of the road, always find a safe parking spot or area if you need to stop to enjoy the Icelandic Landscape or Northern Lights.

The Ring Road or Route 1 goes all the way around Iceland, about 1332 KM and it would take you between 12-14 hours without any stops.. We don’t recommend that! For you to be able to enjoy and experience the stops and places along the way we would recommend taking 6 – 10 days to go all the way around Iceland.

All the major roadways including the Ring Road are paved and accessible all year around. Make sure you only drive on paved roads, that way you shouldn’t have any problems.

The weather in Iceland can change very quickly so it’s important for your to stay up to date on the weather conditions, especially during the winter months. Weather conditions can be checked out on the Icelandic Meteorological Office website, which is the most accurate weather forecast available. The website’s different maps display temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and even avalanche forecasts. When driving in Iceland a pair of good sunglasses are a must!

You can drive on all roads in Iceland except F-roads or mountain roads that are only accessible for special off-road vehicles.  Many of the top Icelandic tourist attractions are located along the Ring Road or other paved roads. The main roads are accessible with a regular car and easy to drive.

As the sun only sets for 3 hours per day from mid-may to mid-august this period offers almost 24 hours of daylight. In midwinter, there are around 5 hours of effective daylight.

During winter months we are working with very limited daylight hours. This may result in some of the sites being visited in dusk or darkness or skipped altogether. We will do our best to avoid this, but ask for your understanding should this happen.

Dress according to the weather, the weather can change very rapidly depending on if it’s winter or summer. You should always wear good shoes or boots for your maximum comfort. Wearing three layers of lightweight upper body clothing is the most effective method for retaining warmth. The weather is so unpredictable in Iceland. it’s always good to bring more than you use just in case.
  • Base layer – normal underwear and short or long-sleeve t-shirts are usually fine
  • Warm sweater – wool or fleece
  • Lightweight outdoor trousers/pants
  • Lightweight weatherproof jacket with hood – rain – and windproof shell
  • Good hiking boots – water-resistant
  • Hat, scarf and gloves/mittens

A passport or other travel document accepted by Icelandic authorities must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay for visitors to Iceland.

In Iceland nearly all bills that you receive already include gratuity. You will still get a smile and Icelanders will not think any worse of you if you tip. Of course, Icelanders will not decline a tip for good service. If you feel you have received excellent service, the best way to show your appreciation is to tip 10 percent or round up the amount of the bill.
